The Story
The kid at the front window never forgets a thing.
Danny Mercer used to be one of the best shots in the Marine Corps. Now he buffs gym floors on the night shift at a Baltimore elementary school, the bills are stacking up in the drawer under the microwave, and the electric company has just set a shutoff date. He has one reason to keep going: Jonah.
Jonah is eleven, nonspeaking and autistic, the boy Danny adopted four years ago. He talks through a tablet when he talks at all. He counts the buses on West Pratt Street. And he pins the whole world to the refrigerator in an order only he understands.
Then fourteen shipping containers vanish from the Port of Baltimore. On paper they cleared customs. In reality they never existed. Jonah has already put them on the wall.
Allister Perry runs Sentinel, a tiny agency that doesn't officially exist and doesn't arrest anyone. He believes the boy sees what no one else can. Nobody else does: not the FBI, not the Secret Service, and not the child-welfare investigator closing in on Danny's family.
With the State of the Union days away, a father has to learn to read his son's crosswords and chess moves, because Jonah isn't just seeing the pattern. He's telling Danny where to stand.
